Cambodian Government Responds to Thailand’s Diplomatic Actions Amid Border Tensions

Phnom Penh, July 23, 2025 — In a swift response to recent reports that Thailand has decided to downgrade diplomatic relations and alter its ambassadorial presence, the Cambodian government announced today that it has taken reciprocal measures in accordance with the escalating tensions.

According to statements from Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Cambodia has decided to downgrade its diplomatic ties with Thailand to the level of Second Charge d’Affaires. This decision represents the lowest level of diplomatic representation and reflects the seriousness of the current diplomatic impasse.

Furthermore, Cambodia has ordered all Cambodian diplomatic staff at the Cambodian Embassy in Bangkok to return to Phnom Penh immediately. In parallel, Cambodia has called on the Thai diplomatic mission in Phnom Penh to adopt similar measures by redeploying or recalling its personnel from the Cambodian capital.

The move comes in response to media reports, including coverage by The Nation and other Thai outlets, which announced that Thailand intends to recall its ambassador from Phnom Penh, expel the Cambodian ambassador from Bangkok, and cut diplomatic ties at higher levels. The Cambodian government described these measures as a necessary response to the recent developments and heightened tensions along the border region.

This diplomatic escalation follows the recent exchange of accusations regarding a landmine incident in Preah Vihear province and Thailand’s decision to sever high-level diplomatic engagements. Both nations have expressed a desire to resolve disputes through dialogue, but current tensions have led to these reciprocal diplomatic steps.

The Cambodian authorities reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region, emphasizing the importance of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity. Cambodia called on Thailand to return to constructive dialogue and de-escalate the situation, urging all parties to avoid further actions that could undermine regional stability.

The situation remains dynamic, and both sides have signaled that diplomatic channels are open for future negotiations. Cambodia continues to advocate for peaceful resolution and adherence to international law, emphasizing that the recent measures are temporary and aimed at safeguarding national interests.
